Who owns Rubis? Meet billionaires behind the petrol station

Rubis Energy is one of the leading gas stations in Kenya. having a total of 236 petrol stations around the country, it is difficult to miss their station in any major town around the country. A spot check in the company’s website reveals that Rubis is a French company. The company was formed in 1990 with the main aim of distributing petroleum products. Since its creation, the company has grown to to other continents other than Europe with the company currently operating in Caribbean and Africa.

After conducting market research in Kenyan market and East African market at large, The company made its debut into Kenyan market in 2019.  The company purchased Kenol kobill at a cost of 38.3 billion Kenyan Shillings after which it took over the operation of the company. The petrol stations belonging to Kenol wher taken by Rubis and re-branded after the take over.

The company bought another petrol station known as Gulf and took over its operations re-branding its petrol stations. After taking over the operation of the two stations, Rubis brought up more stations on their own making them the leading fuel retailers in Kenya with 236 stations a record that was formerly held by Total Kenya with 150 stations.

Shareholders

The company has several shareholders who owns given percentages of the company’s shares, free float investors own 85.74 per cent of Rubis. 0.13 % is owned by the company’s Supervisory board. Wellington Management Group owns (5.08%) General Partner managers (2.21%), Marcel Dessault (5.45%), Rubis Avenir mutual fund owns (1.32%), and Treasury shares owns (0.06%). The company sells liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), lubricants, commercial and resellers (selling petroleum products in bulk for other resellers), export sales, storage and assets, and aviation (fuel used in air transport).
