Pumwani Maternity to undergo significant changes
Nairobi Governor Johnstone Sakaja has announced significant changes at Pumwani Maternity Hospital, which he says will greatly improve the quality of care for mothers giving birth at the facility.
In a statement released earlier today, Sakaja said that the hospital will be installing brand new lifts to help mothers in labour and delivering. The current lifts, which have been in use since the early 80s, have been out of commission for years.
Safety at Pumwani Maternity
“The safety and wellbeing of mothers and their babies is our top priority, and we cannot afford to have outdated equipment compromising their care,” Sakaja said. “With the installation of these new lifts, we can ensure that mothers can get to the delivery room quickly and safely.”
In addition to the lifts, the hospital will also be getting a brand new generator for power backup. The current generator will be serviced and moved to the nearby Pumwani College of Nursing.
Sakaja emphasized that these changes are just the beginning of a larger effort to improve healthcare in Nairobi. “As we keep saying, lazima iWork – we must work to make things better,” he said. “We are committed to investing in our hospitals and clinics to ensure that all Nairobi residents have access to high-quality healthcare.”

Concern at Pumwani
The changes at Pumwani Maternity Hospital come amid growing concerns about the state of healthcare in Nairobi, which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. With these new upgrades, Sakaja hopes to provide some much-needed relief for mothers and their families.
