Michael Jackson’s Jacket Sold For Sh46 Million At Auction

  • The renowned leather jacket worn by Michael Jackson in the 1980s and used in a Pepsi commercial has been auctioned for £250,000 ($306,000).
  • The black-and-white outfit is projected to fetch between £200,000 and £400,000 at the London auction on Friday.

It was one of almost 200 pieces of music memorabilia auctioned, including artifacts associated with George Michael, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie, Oasis, and The Beatles.

Michael Jackson wore this jacket in 1984 for the first of several Pepsi ads he appeared in. These commercials are best known for an unfortunate occurrence in which Jackson’s hair caught fire while filming, resulting in major burns; it’s worth mentioning that he was wearing a different jacket at the time.

Wham! star George Michael’s jacket from a duet with Aretha Franklin in “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)” was also auctioned off. The La Rocka jacket sold for £93,750 ($115,000), far beyond the expected price range of £30,000 to £60,000.

The beehive hairpiece that Amy Winehouse wore in the 2007 music video for “You Know I’m No Good,” which was featured on her last album “Back To Black,” was another interesting piece. The hairpiece sold for £18,750, or $22,900, more than its estimated value.

A wide range of memorabilia, including pieces connected to Johnny Marr, Queen, and Elvis Presley, were up for auction. Some things, meanwhile, like an AC/DC member Angus Young’s Gibson guitar and a special edition Yellow Submarine Beatles jukebox, didn’t sell.

Propstore’s director of music and posters, Mark Hochman, stressed that many of the artifacts up for auction were not previously available to the general public. Notably, Michael Jackson memorabilia has historically brought in large sums of money; for example, the black fedora hat he wore right before his famous moonwalk dance in 1983 sold for thousands of dollars.
