IEBC disqualifies Mike Sonko to vie for Mombasa governor post.
The former Nairobi governor had shown interest for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat on a Wiper Party ticket.
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati has disqualified former Nairobi governor Hon Mike Mbuvi Sonko for vying for the Mombasa governor post in the upcoming August 9 general elections.
Speaking to the media at Bomas of Kenya, Chebukati says that it’s against the law for a person who has been impeached from public office for abuse of public office.
“We received application from two aspirants seeking to be elected as governor and senator respectively who have earlier been impeached, the commission position is that the stipulation article 75 of the constitution was never intended on a mental purpose but has an effective clause that requires holders of public office to conduct themselves with decorum and in a manner that brings honour. In terms of the provisions of article 75 of the constitution, a person is dismissed or removed from office is disqualified to hold any other public office either elective or appointive” said Chebukati.
Mike Sonko who previously served as the governor of Nairobi county before being impeached in 2021 for abuse of office and misappropriation of public funds had set eyes to succeed outgoing Hon Ali Hassan Joho on a Wiper Party ticket.
With the disqualification of Sonko from vying in August, all eyes in Mombasa shift to Mvita MP Abdul Swamad Nassir of ODM and former Senator Hassan Omar of UDA who have come out as top candidates eyeing for the 001 crown after Joho.
