Four Kenyan referees will take charge of a major 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier when Egypt host Angola in Cairo. Peter Waweru Kamaku will lead the officiating team as centre referee, supported by three compatriots. The Group B match is scheduled for Friday, September 25, at Cairo International Stadium. Kick-off is set for 10pm East Africa Time.
Waweru will be joined by Stephen Eleazar Onyango Yiembe and Gilbert Kipkoech Cheruiyot as his two assistants. Dickens Mimisa Nyagruwa has been assigned the role of fourth official. The appointments give Kenya a full officiating contingent for one of the fixtures marking the start of the AFCON qualifying campaign.
Waweru brings considerable continental experience to the assignment. He has previously handled Egypt’s matches, including their 2-1 win over Burkina Faso during the 2024 AFCON qualifiers. His record also includes assignments involving Egyptian clubs in CAF competitions.
The Kenyan referee was part of the country’s officiating contingent at the 2025 CHAN tournament. He has also received appointments in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. Yiembe and Cheruiyot have previously worked with Waweru on continental assignments.
Yiembe adds UEFA experience
Yiembe arrives in Cairo after reaching another milestone in his refereeing career. The Nakuru-born official recently became the first Kenyan match official to be selected for a UEFA competition. He was appointed second assistant referee for the 2026 UEFA Super Cup involving Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg, Austria.
That match formed part of an East African officiating team headed by Somalia’s Omar Abdulkadir Artan. Yiembe’s involvement marked a significant step in Kenya’s representation within European football officiating. His latest CAF appointment now gives him another high-profile international assignment.
Yiembe has also worked in FIFA and CAF competitions. His continued selection for international matches has added to the growing number of opportunities for Kenyan officials on the continental stage. The Egypt versus Angola fixture will further extend that experience.
Nyagruwa will serve as the fourth official when the two sides meet in Cairo. He also has experience at major continental tournaments and has previously been involved in video assistant referee duties. His assignments include the 2025 AFCON meeting between South Africa and Egypt.
The appointment means each member of the Kenyan team has previously worked at international or major continental level. Their combined experience will be called upon as Egypt and Angola begin their campaign for a place at the 2027 tournament.
The two nations are among four teams in Group B, alongside Malawi and South Sudan. Egypt will start their campaign at home against Angola before travelling to Juba for a meeting with South Sudan on September 29. Angola will also be looking to make a positive start in a group where early points could prove important.
The 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign features 48 nations spread across 12 groups. The opening two matchdays are scheduled between September 24 and October 6. The qualifying programme is expected to run through March 2027.
The top two teams qualify from groups that do not include an automatically qualified co-host. Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda already have places at the 2027 tournament because they are hosting the competition. The qualifiers will therefore determine the remaining teams that join the three East African hosts.
The Cairo assignment adds another notable chapter to Kenya’s growing presence in international refereeing. Waweru’s continued CAF appointments have kept him among the country’s experienced match officials. Yiembe’s recent UEFA Super Cup appearance has also opened another milestone in Kenya’s officiating history.
With all four officials carrying international or continental experience, the Egypt versus Angola assignment will provide another opportunity for Kenyan referees to operate on a major stage. Their selection also underlines the continued involvement of Kenyan officials in CAF and FIFA competitions.
