The Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG) is gearing up for a high-stakes election with the leadership race intensifying between the incumbent president Zubeidah Kananu and veteran broadcaster Yvonne Okwara. As the current president, Kananu seeks a second term, while Okwara, a seasoned Citizen TV anchor, aims to challenge her and reshape the Guild’s direction.

The election notice, issued by KEG’s Returning Officer, Advocate Sophie Kaibiria, confirms that all 2025 election nominations have been validated in accordance with the Guild’s constitution and policy guidelines, published on March 3, 2025.

Key Elections and Unopposed Positions

The 2025 KEG elections, set for April 12, will see Guild members vote for several pivotal positions including the President, Vice President, Council Members, and Trustees. In the Vice President race, Francis Openda has been declared the uncontested winner.

Meanwhile, positions for Print Media, Online Media, and Television Council Members have also been secured without opposition. Linda Bach, Kenfrey Kiberenge, and Millicent Awuor are set to take their seats in these categories.

The Radio Council Member race will feature Toepista Nabusoba and Agnes Mwangangi, while in the Academia category, Nathan Nayere Masambu and Dr. Julius Ombui Bosire are competing for the position.

Trustees and Election Ethics

The Trustee elections have seen Martin Masai, Ruth Nesoba, and Mbugua Ng’ang’a emerge as uncontested winners. These candidates have been duly confirmed without opposition, strengthening the Guild’s leadership foundation.

With campaigns officially underway, candidates are reminded to adhere strictly to KEG’s Elections Code of Ethics. The campaigning period will run until April 11, 2025, at midnight, after which the final votes will be cast on April 12.

Call for Active Participation

As the election day approaches, members of KEG are encouraged to remain active and engaged. The Guild emphasizes the importance of upholding professional standards, as well as the core values of accountability and editorial independence, which are crucial in the organization’s mission moving forward.

With the leadership contest poised to shape the Guild’s future, all eyes will be on the election results in April 2025.
