  • George Wanga’s appointment was revoked just months after being named to the role.
  • The announcement was made in the June 16, 2025, Kenya Gazette.
  • Adan Ali will serve for a three-year term, starting immediately.
  • The new chair will lead policy oversight and strategic direction at the regulator.

President William Ruto has replaced George Wanga with Adan Haji Ali as the new non-executive Chairperson of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA). The change was made official in a Gazette notice dated June 16, 2025.

The notice clearly stated that George Wanga’s appointment had been revoked. This decision was made under Section 12(1)(a) of the Energy Act, 2019, giving the President the authority to appoint or remove individuals from this position.

Ali, who is a former Mandera South MP, is expected to serve for three years, starting from the date of the announcement. His role will not involve day-to-day operations but will focus on overseeing governance and guiding the strategic direction of the energy regulator.

As the new board leader, Adan Haji Ali will help guide EPRA’s long-term policies, ensure compliance, and support the Authority in achieving its key goals and national responsibilities in the energy sector.

Wanga’s Short-Lived Term Ends

George Wanga, who is also the spouse of Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, had only been in the position since January 17, 2025. His removal brings an early end to what was expected to be a longer stay at the helm of EPRA’s board.
