- The victim, Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, is nursing serious injuries.
- Viral video sparked uproar across the country and triggered quick action.
- Officers are now held at the Capitol Hill Police Station awaiting arraignment.
- Human rights groups and lawyers are demanding transparency and due process.
The two officers caught on camera confronting and shooting an unarmed trader during Tuesday’s demos in the city centre have finally been identified. They are Masinde Baraza and Duncan Kiprono, both serving under the Kileleshwa Police Station command.
Caught on Camera, Caught by the Law
The duo appeared in a now-viral clip assaulting Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, who was selling masks along Moi Avenue. They slapped and pushed him, and just as he tried to escape, one fired a shot that left him collapsed on the ground.
Following that clip’s circulation, both officers were immediately arrested and taken to the Capitol Hill Police Station, where they are currently being held. The Inspector-General directed that the two be charged without delay.
Boniface Mwangi was first rushed to Bliss Medical Centre for emergency care and later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital. Early medical reports show he was hit in the head by a rubber bullet, but he is now recovering.
Speaking on the incident, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed investigations were underway, with orders to ensure prosecution of the involved officer(s).
However, things took a twist when lawyer Felix Kiton, who represents the two officers, said he had not been allowed access to his clients. He also raised concerns over the lack of formal charge details.
“We’re yet to meet them or be told the exact charges. But the law must be followed,” Kiton told reporters outside the station.
The shooting took place just as tensions across the country were rising following the death of Albert Ojwang, a young teacher who allegedly died in police custody. This tragedy ignited street protests demanding justice and reforms.
The two officers are expected to be taken to court before the week ends. Authorities are urging Kenyans to stay calm as the justice process runs its course.
