Museveni tested positive for Covid-19, as he hinted at his condition following a State of the Nation address at the Ugandan parliament on Wednesday, June 7.

During his address, the 78-year-old Museveni mentioned feeling cold-like symptoms in the morning and took a rapid Covid-19 test, which initially came back negative.

However, upon further analysis, one of the subsequent tests revealed a positive result, while the other remained negative. Museveni stated that he is currently considered a suspect for Covid-19.

Although one of the tests returned a positive result, Dr. Diana Atwine, Museveni’s personal doctor and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, assured the public that the president was in robust health.

She tweeted that Museveni had tested positive for Covid-19 on June 7 after experiencing mild flu-like symptoms but was still able to carry out his duties while adhering to standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Opposition members in Uganda have raised concerns about the president’s health amid new regulations that require Covid-19 testing before meeting with him. They criticize the perceived wastage of public resources on testing, especially since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared an end to the global health emergency caused by Covid-19 in May 2023.

The opposition leader, Mathias Mpunga, argued that Museveni continues to allocate funds to specific companies owned by individuals close to his regime for Covid-19 tests whenever he meets people.
