National Assembly Speaker Moses Wentangula has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to refrain from misleading the public regarding the content of the Finance Bill and instead focus on proposing amendments to clauses they deem unfavourable to Kenyans.

Speaking at a funds drive event in the Lugari constituency, Wentangula emphasized the importance of responsible leadership and constructive engagement in matters concerning the nation’s financial legislation.

The funds drive, organized by Lugari constituency Member of Parliament Hon Nabii Nabwera, successfully raised over Ksh.14 million for the infrastructural development of Lwandeti DEB Secondary School. The event was graced by esteemed guests including Health Cabinet Secretary Ms. Susan Nakhumicha, Governor of Kakamega County H.E Fernandez Barasa, and his deputy Hon Ayub Savula.

Moses Wetangula reminds MPs

In his address, Speaker Wentangula reminded the attending MPs that they possess the constitutional powers to propose amendments to individual clauses within the Finance Bill, citing the need for them to exercise their authority responsibly. He encouraged lawmakers to diligently review the bill during committee sessions and make necessary changes to address any concerns they have, rather than publicly de-campaigning it in village meetings.

“I asked MPs opposed to the Finance Bill to stop misleading the public on the content of the document and push for amendments of the clauses they feel were not good for Kenyans. The Constitution gives MPs powers to push for amendments on clauses that they single out as unfriendly to citizens and that is what I urge them to do instead of decampaigning the document in public meetings in villages. I reminded the legislators that they will have an opportunity to vote for the Bill “clause by clause”. That will give them a chance to make a decision on the document when it will be tabled in the House.”

Furthermore, Wentangula called for a measured and informed debate on the Finance Bill, urging politicians to refrain from making statements that mislead the public or incite resentment among fellow legislators. He underscored the need for unity among MPs from the Western region, irrespective of their political party affiliations, emphasizing that a collective approach is vital for the development and prosperity of the region.

Wetangula’s assurance

Addressing concerns regarding the cost of living, Speaker Wentangula assured the public that President William Ruto shares their concerns and is actively working to alleviate the hardships faced by Kenyans. He reiterated the importance of MPs working together to address issues of national importance, urging them to prioritize the welfare of their constituents and the nation as a whole.

In conclusion, Wentangula pledged his support for the Western MPs caucus, a unified platform that brings together all MPs from the region, with a common goal of fostering development and prosperity. He expressed his commitment to actively participate in the caucus’s initiatives, underscoring the significance of collective efforts in driving positive change.
