- The government has proposed the move to safeguard Uganda’s youth from the dangers of online pornography
Uganda’s internet service providers have been assigned a significant responsibility of blocking access to pornographic websites. In a recent development, the government has issued a directive demanding the prevention of adult content in order to safeguard the nation’s youth from the dangers posed by online pornography.
The government’s primary objective is to shield young individuals from explicit material, protect them from potential predators, and counter offensive social media posts.
This action comes in response to a request made by Thomas Tayebwa, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament in Uganda, who urged the government to take decisive action in blocking all pornographic content.

Tayebwa emphasized the urgent need for action, stating, “Our children are exposed to violent cartoons, our teenagers are exposed to pornography. In many Muslim countries, pornography is already blocked. Consider the potential benefits for our economy if we were to restrict access to pornography. Pornography is detrimental to our society.”
Recognizing the severity of the issue, the Ugandan government established a “pornographic control committee” in 2017. This committee was entrusted with the responsibility of identifying and prohibiting pornographic material within the country’s borders.
In a notable effort to combat the problem, the committee even allocated Ksh.12 million towards the acquisition of a specialized technology that purportedly had the ability to detect all pornographic content circulating in Uganda.
