Gaucho to Skip Sabasaba Azimio Demonstrations
- Gaucho was recently attacked by ‘armed goons’
- He says he still supports the Azimio protests
Activist Calvince Okoth, the self-proclaimed Bunge la Mwananchi president, says he is yet to decide whether he will attend the planned Azimio demonstrations on July 7, 2023.
Okoth, who is commonly referred to as Gaucho in political circles, was recently attacked by armed goons while on his way to Kamukunji grounds to attend a political rally graced by Azimio leaders including Raila Odinga.
In an interview with Nairobi News, Gaucho said he is still recuperating from the attack, which left him with minor injuries.
“I am yet to decide whether I will attend or not. Besides, I am still recuperating following the previous attack that left me with minor injuries,” he explained.

However, Gaucho said he fully supports the Azimio protests, which he believes are intended to bring revolution in the country.
He advised Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga to hold the demos “once or twice” a week for them to be effective.
“I fully support maandamano (protests). The cost of living has gone so high following the passing of Finance Bill 2023 with Value Added tax on petroleum products increased from 8 to 16 percent,” said Gaucho.
He suggested that Azimio should wait for six months until a time he believes Kenyans will feel the pinch of the high cost of living before organizing the demos.
“It would be better for us in the opposition to wait until Kenyans feel the pinch. This will make everyone come out when such a protest is organized,” he added.
Gaucho in an earlier interview revealed he was attacked on June 27, 2023 between Shauri Moyo and Burma market in Nairobi’s Eastlands area.
“They beat me up and I was saved by a woman who witnessed the incident and started wailing.”
Gaucho has been instrumental in the anti-government protests which were aimed at lowering the cost of living.
Azimio is set to hold a nationwide protest rally on Saba Saba (July,07,2023) over the high cost of living.
