Details Of Wetangula-Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Meeting Revealed

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula recently hosted a courtesy call from H.E. Sergey Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Republic, at his office in Parliament Buildings in Nairobi.
The meeting aimed to further strengthen the warm and cordial ties between Kenya and Russia, which have existed since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1963.

During the discussion, a wide range of bilateral, multilateral, and regional issues were addressed to enhance the relationship between the two countries. Among the topics covered was Kenya’s participation in the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit and Economic Forum scheduled for July in St. Petersburg. The summit aims to provide a fresh impetus to Russia’s relations with African nations and promote a comprehensive and equal partnership.
As the Speaker, Wetangula expressed his commitment to strengthening the relationship between the parliaments of Kenya and Russia. He proposed exchange programs, sharing of experiences, values, and technological advancements, particularly in the transition from analogue to digital operations and the paperless conduct of parliamentary business.

“We had a lengthy discussion on a myriad of issues touching on bilateral, multilateral, and regional matters aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries. We also discussed Kenya’s participation at the forthcoming Russia-Africa Summit and Economic Forum slated for July in St. Petersburg,” he said
“The summit aims to provide a new constructive impetus to the development of Russia’s multifaceted relations with African countries and bolster the policy of a comprehensive and equal partnership with the African people. As the Speaker I will help in strengthening the relationship between the two Houses of Parliament and have exchange programs, share experiences, values and technological advancement since as a Parliament we are moving away from analogue operations to highly digital operations and paperless conduct of our business.”

While Kenya is already one of Russia’s largest trading partners in Africa, there is untapped potential for further economic cooperation. The need to explore avenues for improving trade between the two countries was emphasized during the meeting. Areas of collaboration such as education, trade, agriculture, tourism, health, and science and technology were also identified as potential avenues for boosting cooperation.
