With several of his major friends targeting the same spots, Deputy President William Ruto faces a hard battle in selecting candidates to support for various seats in the South Rift.
Aspirants have been baying for Ruto’s endorsement, which is seen as a surefire way to secure the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket and win the General Election in a region where the party has a stronghold.
With less than five months until the August elections, the candidates have been vying for the attention of the UDA leader, with some ensuring that they attend his meetings in the region where the second in command enjoys near-fanatical support.
They include Christopher Lang’at, the incumbent, Wilson Sossion, a nominated MP, and Hillary Sigei, a Nairobi-based lawyer.
In what could be a close contest, the three are slated to square off.
It goes without saying that the three has strong professional credentials and is regarded as close to the party’s leadership.
They also have a sizable fan base in their home countries.
Before he and other Ruto allies were removed of their parliamentary leadership roles, Lang’at, a former university lecturer, was the chairwoman of the crucial Senate Education committee.
After President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy had a falling out, the congressman became a harsh opponent of the Kenyan leader.
