Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s political camp appears to be closing in on the unveiling of its new political vehicle, with strategist Pauline Njoroge giving the clearest indication yet that an announcement is approaching. Njoroge said supporters would not have to wait much longer for the new party to be made public. Her remarks came at a time when the identity of the party has become increasingly complicated by developments surrounding the Ukombozi name.
Njoroge posted on X on Tuesday that the party supporters had been waiting for would be unveiled “very very soon”. She also praised Sifuna, writing, “Very very soon, the Party that we have all been waiting for will be unveiled! H.E Edwin Sifuna amejipanga sawa sawa!” The post did not reveal the proposed party’s name or provide a specific launch date.
The Linda Mwananchi movement has been working towards securing a political vehicle ahead of the 2027 General Election. Previous reports indicated that the group had been considering an existing party and had explored an identity associated with Ukombozi. Sifuna’s camp has not publicly confirmed the final name of the party that will be unveiled.
The uncertainty follows a regulatory setback involving the United Democratic Party. The party had sought to change its name to Ukombozi People’s Party, with the proposed rebranding reportedly connected to political plans involving Sifuna and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya. The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties rejected the proposed name, citing its similarity to The Ukombozi Alliance.
Under Section 8(c) of the Political Parties Act, the Registrar can reject a proposed party identity where its name, abbreviation, slogan or symbol closely resembles that of another registered political party or legal entity in a manner that could cause confusion. The Registrar subsequently stated that it had not approved or authorised the use of the Ukombozi People’s Party name by the United Democratic Party.
The naming issue became more prominent after Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition formally changed its name to The Ukombozi Alliance. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced the rebranding on September 21 after saying the coalition’s leadership had unanimously approved the change. The alliance is now using the new identity as opposition parties reorganise ahead of the 2027 election.
Kalonzo said the rebranded coalition would operate under the philosophy “One Term, One Team, One Coalition”. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to chair the alliance, with further organisational decisions being worked on by its constituent parties. The development has brought the Ukombozi name directly into the wider debate surrounding the political vehicle being prepared by Sifuna’s camp.
The Registrar’s rejection of the proposed Ukombozi People’s Party name means the Sifuna-linked movement may have to use a different identity or political vehicle. Reports have indicated that Linda Mwananchi had been examining several existing parties as possible options. A source quoted by The Star said the movement was considering up to four outfits, while Sifuna previously suggested supporters would eventually know the new vehicle.
Disagreement Emerges Over Origin of Ukombozi Name
The political branding dispute has also triggered a response from Wiper Patriotic Front spokesperson Ndegwa Njiru. Njiru argued that Kalonzo had been using related terminology before it became associated with Sifuna’s emerging political project. He pointed to the phrase “Komboa Kenya”, which he said Kalonzo had used in April 2025.
Njiru’s comments were made as speculation grew over whether the two political camps could end up seeking similar identities. His position represents Wiper’s explanation of the history of the terminology and does not, on its own, settle any legal question over ownership or registration of the name. The formal registration position remains governed by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.
Against that backdrop, Njoroge’s latest message has renewed attention on Sifuna’s political plans. Her post suggests that the Linda Mwananchi movement could soon disclose the alternative vehicle it intends to use. It remains unclear whether the eventual party will retain any reference to Ukombozi or adopt a completely different identity.
The timing is significant because opposition formations are simultaneously restructuring ahead of the 2027 General Election. Azimio has already unveiled its new Ukombozi Alliance identity, while Sifuna’s camp is yet to publicly disclose its final political vehicle. Njoroge’s statement has therefore increased expectations of an announcement, but the party’s official name and unveiling date remain unconfirmed.
