The father of Stoopid Boy has opened up about his late son’s childhood, revealing how a name given to him jokingly by schoolmates eventually became his identity in the music industry.
George William Ochieng Awili said Edgar Davids Odhiambo Ochieng was a playful child who often found himself in trouble while growing up. He recalled that his son’s character at school played a major role in the birth of the name Stoopid Boy.
Awili said Edgar was known for his playful behaviour as a young boy. Whenever he teased or annoyed other children at school, his fellow pupils would sometimes call him a “stupid boy”.
Instead of being discouraged by the nickname, Edgar decided to own it. His father said the young boy began referring to himself as “I am stupid”, which eventually developed into the name Stoopid Boy.
The childhood nickname later followed him into his music career. What started as teasing among schoolmates eventually became the name that fans came to associate with him.
Awili also explained how his son got the name Edgar. He said he was a football player himself and had given his elder son the name Ian Wright after the former football star.
For Edgar, the inspiration came from the 1998 World Cup. Awili said he saw a player named Edgar who was left-footed and immediately liked the name.
He later told the child’s mother that if they had a son, they would name him Edgar. When the boy was born on October 28, 2001, they named him Edgar Davids Odhiambo Ochieng.
According to Awili, Edgar’s connection with music also started when he was very young. He said he enjoyed listening to Beenie Man and would often sing along to one of the musician’s popular songs while raising his son.
Awili recalled that Edgar began responding to the beats when he was only seven months old. The young boy would follow the rhythm whenever his father sang, and the interest continued as he grew older.
The father believes Edgar’s musical talent may also have been inherited through the family. He said his maternal uncle was a talented musician, making him believe that music could have been a family gift.
Awili is now mourning his son after what has been an extremely difficult period for the family. He revealed that Edgar’s elder brother was buried only three and a half months before Stoopid Boy died.
The loss has left him deeply hurt and shocked. Awili said he had spent many years with his son and could only leave the situation in God’s hands.
For the grieving father, the memories of Edgar stretch back to his childhood, from the boy who was given the nickname “stupid” by his schoolmates to the young talent who developed a deep love for music.
The name Stoopid Boy was therefore not created as a carefully planned stage identity. It grew from Edgar’s childhood experiences and his decision to turn a teasing nickname into something he could proudly use.
His father’s recollections also show that Edgar’s passion for music began long before he became known publicly. The early signs of his love for rhythm, combined with the family’s musical background, eventually became part of his journey as an entertainer.
