A Nairobi court has granted detectives an additional 30 days to continue holding three suspects as investigations intensify into the killing of clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
The ruling means police will retain custody of the suspects while investigators complete forensic examinations, digital analysis and witness interviews connected to the fatal shooting that occurred in Upper Hill on July 29, 2026.
The three suspects are police officer Elijah Kibelion Kimoi, Daniel Mwangi Njoroge and Kevin Ngugi Kinuthia. Prosecutors say the trio is under investigation for alleged involvement in Dr Mutiso’s death.
During the court session, the prosecution asked for more time to complete pending investigations before deciding whether charges should be filed. The court heard that the suspects did not object to the request for continued detention.
Under the orders issued, Kimoi will remain at Ruaraka Police Station, Njoroge at Pangani Police Station and Kinuthia at Gigiri Police Station.
State prosecutors told the court that detectives are still pursuing additional suspects and examining evidence collected from the crime scene. They argued that releasing the suspects at this stage could interfere with witnesses and affect ongoing investigations.
Investigators informed the court that several inquiries remain unfinished, including forensic analysis, digital evidence review and witness statements.
Court documents show that detectives recovered two spent cartridges and two bullet fragments from the scene. The items were submitted for forensic examination as part of the murder investigation.
Police also recovered a Mini Jericho pistol that has been examined by ballistic experts. Preliminary findings presented to the court indicate that the firearm is linked to the recovered cartridge cases and a bullet head.
The prosecution further stated that the pistol had been issued to a senior police officer who is currently being sought by investigators.
Detectives have obtained CCTV footage, call-data records and details of several vehicles and a motorcycle believed to be relevant to the case.
The vehicles listed in the court application include registration numbers KDJ 609D, KDH 600A and KDE 400W. Investigators are also examining motorcycle registration KMGZ 980D.
Police are analysing movement patterns and communication records to reconstruct events leading to Dr Mutiso’s death.
According to court papers, investigators believe the suspects may have played different roles in the incident.
The prosecution alleges that Kimoi fired the fatal shot. Njoroge is alleged to have driven a black Prado that blocked the Toyota Passo in which Dr Mutiso was travelling, while Kinuthia is alleged to have transported and later evacuated the suspected shooter using a motorcycle.
These allegations have not yet been tested in court, and all three suspects remain under investigation.
Detectives are also investigating whether the killing may be connected to a long-running land dispute involving Dr Mutiso.
Prosecutors told the court that the deceased had previously reported an attempted attack and had complained of being followed before her death. Investigators are examining whether those earlier incidents could be linked to the shooting.
The murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso has generated significant public interest, with calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The three suspects will remain in custody for 30 days as detectives continue gathering evidence. Police say efforts to trace other individuals connected to the case are ongoing, and further legal action will depend on the outcome of the remaining investigations.
