Arsenal have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Brazil international Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United in a deal worth £75 million. The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract at Emirates Stadium, with the club holding an option to extend it by a further 12 months.
The transfer ends Guimaraes’ successful spell at Newcastle, where he became one of the club’s most influential players after arriving from Lyon in January 2022.
Speaking after completing the move, Guimaraes admitted leaving Newcastle was emotionally challenging because of the strong connection he had built with the club and its supporters.
He said he wanted a new experience for himself and his family and felt ready to take on a fresh challenge. The midfielder added that his ambition is to compete for major trophies and create history with Arsenal.
Guimaraes revealed that several Arsenal players contacted him before the transfer was finalised. Fellow Brazilian Gabriel was among those who sent messages, while Declan Rice also welcomed him to the club.
The new Arsenal signing said Rice joked that their midfield battles were now over and that they would be teammates rather than opponents.
Newcastle confirmed the transfer and wished Guimaraes and his family well for the future. The midfielder left the club’s training camp in La Manga, Spain, earlier this week to complete the deal after negotiations between the two clubs reached a breakthrough.
His departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter at St James’ Park, where he quickly became a fan favourite and a leader in the dressing room.
Guimaraes joined Newcastle when the club was battling relegation during the 2021-22 season. Under former manager Eddie Howe, he became central to the team’s rapid improvement and helped guide Newcastle back into European competition.
One of the defining moments of his Newcastle career came in 2025 when he captained the side to victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. The triumph ended a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy and made him the first Newcastle captain in decades to lift such silverware.
He also played an important role in Newcastle’s Champions League qualification campaigns in 2023 and 2025 before the club endured a difficult league season that ended with a 12th-place finish.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been seeking additional quality and depth in midfield, and Guimaraes arrives with significant Premier League experience. Known for his passing range, ball-winning ability and leadership, he is expected to compete for a central role alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.
The signing represents one of Arsenal’s biggest investments of the summer as they continue building a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League and Champions League.
