The father of late footballer Silas Abungana has accused Kakamega County General Hospital of neglect, claiming his son was left without care for more than a day during his critical condition.
“When I brought him to the hospital at around 2 am on Tuesday, no one attended to him. I returned at 6 am, and nothing had been done yet. Tragically, he passed away at 6 am on Wednesday,” Abungana’s father told the media.
He insisted that prompt medical attention could have prevented his death, stating, “Silas died without treatment, despite being in the ward for hours.”
Reports indicate that Abungana was allegedly attacked by his younger brother following a family dispute over his wife, whom relatives reportedly did not approve of.
Police officer Daniel Mukumbi confirmed that the suspect fled the scene and that no arrests have been made. “We have been in contact with the family since the incident occurred at home, involving family members. The young man reportedly escaped after harming Silas,” Mukumbi said.
Abungana’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through the Kenyan football scene. Clubs, players, and fans have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the defender.
The 31-year-old, who played for Kakamega Homeboyz, had been a regular feature in the team’s defensive line in league matches.
Kakamega Homeboyz described him as a disciplined and committed professional whose passing is a “devastating loss.” The club also requested privacy for the family and teammates during this difficult period.
“During this incredibly difficult time, we respectfully request privacy for Silas’ family, teammates, friends, and club officials as we come to terms with this unimaginable loss. The club will issue further communication in due course. Rest in peace, Silas,” the statement read.
