  • Beatrice Chebet was promoted from Corporal to Sergeant of Police.
  • Recognition followed her double gold victory in the 5,000m and 10,000m races at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
  • Team Kenya returned home with 11 medals: 7 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze.
  • Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat received the athletes at Vigilance House on behalf of IG Douglas Kanja.
  • Promotion mirrors a similar recognition for footballer Boniface Muchiri, recently elevated in the Kenya Defence Forces.

Beatrice Chebet was Kenya’s star in Tokyo, clinching gold in both the 10,000m and 5,000m events.

In the 10,000m final on September 13, Chebet surged ahead in the last lap to win in 30:37.61. Italy’s Nadia Battocletti followed with silver at 30:38.23, while Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay took bronze in 30:39.65.

A week later, in the 5,000m final, Chebet staged another tactical masterclass. After shadowing Faith Kipyegon into the bell lap, she unleashed a final sprint to claim victory in 14:54.36. Kipyegon secured silver with 14:55.07, and Battocletti added bronze in 14:55.42.

On Tuesday, September 23, Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat hosted the returning athletes at Vigilance House.

“In recognition of her remarkable achievement, Corporal Beatrice Chebet was recommended for promotion to the rank of Sergeant of Police.”
 National Police Service Statement

The National Police Service confirmed the promotion, noting Chebet’s contribution to Kenya’s success on the global stage.

Kenya finished the championships with a strong tally of 11 medals: 7 Gold, 2 Silver, 2 Bronze

Chebet’s promotion follows a similar gesture by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in late August.

Harambee Stars and Ulinzi Stars midfielder Boniface Muchiri was elevated from Senior Private to Corporal after excelling at the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The promotion was presided over by General Charles Kahariri, who praised Muchiri for his discipline and excellence in service and sport.

“We are very grateful for your commitment, hard work and excellent performance while serving Kenya and, by extension, the KDF. We wish you success in future assignments and are confident you will continue to excel.”
