- Trophy tour continues ahead of the August 30 CHAN final at Kasarani.
Former Harambee Stars skipper Victor Wanyama has applauded the national team for their spirited display at the African Nations Championship (CHAN), even though their run ended at the quarterfinals.
Speaking on Citizen TV during the CHAN trophy tour on Wednesday, Wanyama said the Stars have shown big progress under coach Benni McCarthy.
Wanyama highlighted the difference in Kenya’s play since McCarthy took charge.
“We have seen a lot of changes since Benni came in. The style of play has improved; we can build from the back, and we defend well even when the numbers are down. Also, the government has really improved the football infrastructure. Things are moving in the right direction,” the ex-Tottenham star noted.
Kenya’s CHAN journey ended in a penalty shootout defeat to Madagascar. But Wanyama insisted the performance proved that local talent is strong.
“People say our league is weak, but from what we saw, with proper support from all stakeholders, our players can go very far,” he said.
He also sent a message to those who missed penalties, urging them not to bow to online trolls.
“They should be proud of what they achieved. Let them not focus on the negative energy from social media. They must keep their heads up and continue building their careers,” Wanyama advised.
The trophy tour is part of CAF’s build-up to the CHAN final, set for August 30 at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The game will see last edition’s bronze medalists, Madagascar, face two-time winners Morocco.
