Kenya’s U-20 team kicked off their AFCON journey with promise but eventually slipped to a 3-2 defeat against a sharp Moroccan side. The young Harambee Stars started on the front foot, showing intent and energy early on.
The reward came in the 16th minute when Okoth capitalised on a defensive mishap to fire Kenya ahead. Their high press and early confidence unsettled the Atlas Lions, and the Kenyans appeared in control.
Morocco Level Just Before the Break
As the first half edged towards a positive conclusion for Kenya, a momentary lapse cost them. Yassir Zabiri found space and netted a brilliant equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time (45+3’), shifting the momentum as the teams headed into the break level.
Second Half Drama as Both Sides Push
The second half resumed with intensity, and once again it was Zabiri who made the difference—this time giving Morocco the lead in the 55th minute. But Kenya refused to go down quietly. They regrouped and mounted a strong comeback.
In the 71st minute, Kitsao struck a deserved equaliser after a swift attacking move split Morocco’s defence. Kenya’s belief surged—but it didn’t last long.
Late Winner Crushes Kenya’s Hopes
Just seven minutes after Kenya had drawn level, Moroccan substitute Laalaoui found the back of the net in the 78th minute. The goal proved to be the winner, denying Kenya what would have been a well-earned point.
Fighting Spirit Despite the Defeat
Although the final whistle confirmed defeat, Kenya walked off the pitch with heads held high. Their commitment, tactical discipline, and fearless performance left a mark. They matched Morocco for long spells and even had chances to snatch a result late on.
Coach John Kamau lauded the players’ determination:
“This was a performance full of heart. We’ll build on this and come back stronger against Nigeria,” he said.
Next Challenge: Tunisia Awaits
With Group B shaping up to be fiercely contested, the young Harambee Stars now face a must-win scenario. A strong result against Tunisia on Sunday will be crucial if they are to remain in the race for a quarterfinal spot.
