Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have arrested two Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for alleged bribery.
The officers, Mutava Lawrence and Timothy Momanyi were arrested on Friday evening, February 21, 2025, during an ongoing anti-corruption crackdown targeting service delivery points.
Demand for KSh 120,000 Bribe
According to EACC, the suspects allegedly demanded KSh 120,000 from a traveller as a condition for releasing confiscated goods.
“The EACC arrested Mutava Lawrence and Timothy Momanyi, employees of Kenya Revenue Authority deployed as Customs Officers at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, for allegedly demanding KSh 120,000 bribe as a condition for the release of goods they had confiscated from a traveller,” the EACC stated.
However, the traveler refused to comply and instead reported the incident to the anti-graft agency.
Sting Operation and Arrest
Acting swiftly, EACC deployed detectives who caught the two officers in the act.
A subsequent search of their vehicles led to the recovery of:
- KSh 297,000 in cash, suspected to be proceeds of corruption.
- A firearm raises further legal concerns.
Legal Action Awaits
The suspects were booked at the Industrial Area Police Station and are awaiting further processing and court arraignment.
This operation is part of EACC’s broader effort to crack down on corruption within government agencies, particularly in tax and customs enforcement.
