  • He now joins global contenders vying for the $1 million (Ksh 129 million) prize.

What began as a passion for teaching modern farming practices has turned into a moment of international recognition for Dominic Orina. The Kenyan teacher was thrilled to learn he had been shortlisted for the 9th Global Teacher Prize, an award that honors exceptional educators making a difference in their communities.

Speaking after receiving the news, Orina expressed his gratitude:

I am overwhelmed and honored to let you know that I have been shortlisted for the top 50 of the 9th Global Teacher Prize! This wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of my amazing people. Keep me in your prayers to carry the trophy home by the end of the competition,” he stated.

Orina’s initiatives include:

Using personal funds to purchase agricultural inputs to train students in smart farming practices.

Encouraging students to apply these skills at home to improve their families’ diets and incomes.

Supporting children from needy backgrounds by soliciting donations for school uniforms, shoes, and other essentials through social media.

The Global Teacher Prize, organized by the AKS Education Awards, offers winners a $1 million cash prize, global recognition, and a platform to inspire other educators.

Kenya last shone in the award in 2019, when Peter Tabichi, a teacher from Nakuru County, won the prize for his selfless dedication, including donating 80% of his salary to support underprivileged students and fostering academic excellence.

The award aims to inspire educators worldwide to innovate, dedicate themselves to their students, and raise education standards globally.

The winner will be announced later this year, with Orina calling on his community to continue supporting his journey:

“My students, parents, teachers, and the entire community, let us share this blessing. Improving people’s lives through education is our priority. Glory be to God.”
