SportPesa Chief Executive Officer and Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri has weighed in on Geoffrey Mosiria’s removal from Nairobi County, promising to offer him a job if he becomes governor in 2027. Karauri made the remarks on Wednesday, October 21, following Governor Johnson Sakaja’s decision to remove Mosiria from his position at City Hall. The legislator suggested that Mosiria deserved a role with clearly defined duties and responsibilities. He did not specify the position he would offer or the terms of the proposed appointment.

“Mosiria, usijali bro, 2027 nikiingia City Hall kama Governor wa Nairobi, nitakuandikia kazi,” Karauri said.

In English, Karauri told Mosiria not to worry, promising him a job if he took over City Hall after the 2027 election. He added that it would be “kazi ya kweli”, meaning real work, rather than a position without responsibilities. His remarks appeared to criticise what he portrayed as Mosiria’s treatment under the current county administration. The offer remains conditional on Karauri winning the Nairobi gubernatorial contest.

Karauri Questions Circumstances of Mosiria’s Removal

Karauri also used Mosiria’s former portfolio to comment on the circumstances of his departure. The legislator said it was ironic that a chief officer responsible for public participation could lose his job for participating. His statement appeared to be a pointed response to the county’s decision, although he did not provide evidence to establish the reasons behind the removal.

“Imagine being the Chief Officer wa Public Participation, then unafutwa kazi kwa ku-participate,” he said.

Karauri also invoked a Swahili proverb: “Fisi akitaka kula watoto wake, kwanza huwasingizia wananuka mbuzi.” The saying describes a hyena accusing its young of smelling like goats before eating them. Karauri did not name anyone directly while using the proverb. His comments came amid political debate surrounding Mosiria’s removal and the approaching 2027 Nairobi governor race.

A Nairobi County circular dated October 21, 2026, and signed by County Secretary and Head of Public Service Machel Waikenda announced Mosiria’s removal. The notice designated Zipporah Njeri Mwangi, the Chief Officer for City Culture, Arts and Tourism, to handle the public participation, citizen engagement and customer service docket in an acting capacity. She is expected to retain her existing responsibilities while taking on the additional assignment. The circular stated that the changes would take effect immediately.

The notice cited sections 44(3)(a), 45(5) and 64 of the County Governments Act, 2012, as the legal basis for the changes. It also announced adjustments affecting other county chief officers. However, the circular did not give a specific reason for Mosiria’s removal. The decision has drawn attention because it followed his declaration of interest in the Nairobi governorship.

Mosiria Had Declared 2027 Governorship Bid

Mosiria announced his intention to contest the Nairobi governorship during a church service hosted by Bishop Margaret Wanjiru on October 11. He presented himself as a candidate seeking to improve the capital’s administration and service delivery. “If you want change in Nairobi, Mosiria is the change. Mosiria will fix Nairobi,” he said during the announcement. His declaration came ten days before the county circular formalised his removal.

Following the decision, Mosiria alleged that his responsibilities had been reduced well before the official announcement. He claimed that Sakaja removed his mandate as an accounting officer on December 28, 2023, and transferred the duties to junior officers. Mosiria also alleged that the budget for his former health docket declined from KSh1.2 billion to KSh100 million. He linked the alleged changes to disagreements over procurement arrangements and the management of public funds.

“Thank you, my boss, for making my sacking official,” Mosiria wrote in his response.

The allegations reflect Mosiria’s account of the events leading to his removal. The county circular, however, did not state that these issues were the reason for the decision. A response from Sakaja or the county addressing Mosiria’s claims was not included in the supplied information.

Mosiria previously worked in the county health department before moving to the environment docket in 2024. He took up the public participation, citizen engagement and customer service role in November 2025. His work in the environment department, including operations targeting illegal dumping and noise pollution, increased his public profile. Videos of some of those activities circulated widely on social media.

Karauri’s promise now adds another political dimension to Mosiria’s departure, with both the job offer and the former chief officer’s governorship ambitions tied to the 2027 elections. The MP has not detailed what role he would offer if elected governor. Mosiria, meanwhile, has publicly maintained his interest in leading Nairobi. The circumstances of his removal and the competing political ambitions are likely to remain part of the conversation around City Hall.
