Tension gripped Ciagini village in Mwea after a 30-year-old man was found dead under unclear circumstances. The incident quickly drew the attention of residents, who gathered in large numbers seeking answers. Emotions ran high as word spread across the area, with many demanding accountability for what had happened.

As the situation escalated, the focus shifted to a local church leader, Simon Wachira, who became the centre of the growing anger. Allegations began circulating among residents, linking him to events that may have led to the man’s death. Though unverified, the claims were enough to trigger unrest within the community.

Within hours, the crowd marched to the bishop’s compound, forcing him to flee for safety. Witnesses say the mob broke into the property before setting it on fire, reducing the home to ashes. The attack was swift and destructive, leaving behind significant losses.

During the chaos, several items were taken from the compound, including furniture, electronics, and important documents. Residents were seen carrying away materials such as iron sheets, generators, and household goods. The scale of destruction pointed to deep anger among the attackers.

According to local accounts, the unrest may have been triggered by earlier accusations involving theft. It is alleged that the bishop had accused the deceased of stealing farm produce and livestock a day before the incident. This claim, combined with reports of an alleged assault, fueled suspicion and outrage among villagers.

Some residents openly defended their actions, making serious accusations against the cleric. However, these claims remain unconfirmed, and authorities have urged caution as investigations continue. The situation reflects how quickly rumours and emotions can spiral into violence.

Officers from nearby stations responded to the scene but initially struggled to control the growing crowd. Reinforcements were later deployed to restore order and secure the area. Despite their efforts, much of the damage had already been done by the time calm returned.

Authorities have since launched a full investigation into both the death and the subsequent destruction of property. Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers are now handling the case, working to establish what exactly happened.

Local security officials have strongly condemned the incident, warning residents against taking matters into their own hands. They emphasised that justice must follow the law and not public anger. The case has once again highlighted the dangers of mob justice, which has been on the rise in parts of the country.

Meanwhile, police continue to guard the church premises linked to the bishop to prevent further attacks. The community remains tense as residents await answers, with many calling for justice while others urge restraint.
