A Kenyan-flagged vessel is at the centre of a cross-border maritime matter after being held by authorities in Tanzania.
The ship, identified as MV Sea Mfalme, was detained under unclear circumstances, prompting immediate attention from the Kenya Maritime Authority and other government agencies.
Officials confirmed on Thursday, April 16, that efforts are ongoing to determine what led to the vessel’s detention.
KMA Director General Omae Nyarandi said the case is currently under active review.
He explained that Kenyan authorities are working closely with their Tanzanian counterparts to gather details and assess the situation before taking further steps.
The collaboration involves multiple agencies from both countries, reflecting the sensitivity of maritime operations within regional waters.
The incident has triggered coordinated engagement between Nairobi and Dodoma, with both sides relying on established cooperation channels.
KMA noted that the matter is being handled within existing intergovernmental frameworks, which guide how such disputes or incidents are resolved between neighbouring states.
This approach is expected to ensure a smooth and lawful process while avoiding unnecessary escalation.
Beyond resolving the immediate issue, Kenyan authorities are also keen to maintain the country’s standing in global shipping.
KMA emphasised its role in ensuring that vessels flying the Kenyan flag meet international maritime standards, a requirement that supports trust in the country’s ship registry.
The authority reiterated that safeguarding compliance and credibility remains a top priority as investigations continue.
Officials have indicated that further details will be shared once the review process is complete.
