What started as a simple taxi ride in Nairobi ended in fraud. Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested Fred Atandi Morara, a cab driver accused of stealing Ksh500,000 from one of his passengers.

According to investigators, Morara had picked up the client on August 8, 2025, offering him a cheaper ride to an Airbnb in Lavington. But the client’s night ended in shock after the driver allegedly disappeared with his mobile phone and siphoned cash from his accounts.

DCI explained that the complainant had been leaving a social joint when Morara approached him. Soon after dropping him off, the driver allegedly transferred more than half a million shillings into different accounts, which were later closed to block recovery.

“The arrest followed a report by the complainant, who said the taxi driver had stolen his phone and moved over Sh500,000,” read part of the DCI statement.

Detectives tracked down Morara while he was driving a Mazda Demio fitted with suspicious number plates KDQ 810B and a second set, KDN 993Q. Inside the vehicle, police also found mobile phones, SIM cards, and a sisal rope believed to have been used in criminal activities.

The suspect has since been handed over to the DCI Dagoretti offices, awaiting arraignment.

The arrest comes barely a day after a separate operation saw eight suspects linked to a violent gang arrested in Mtito Andei, Makueni County. During that raid, officers also recovered stolen property and a Toyota Porte believed to have been used as a getaway vehicle.

According to DCI, these arrests are part of an ongoing crackdown aimed at dismantling organised crime groups and protecting the public from financial and physical harm.
