China records 1.12 billion internet users by mid-2025.

China has now crossed 1.12 billion internet users by June 2025, as reported by the China Internet Network Information Centre. Internet penetration rose to 79.7%, up from 78.6% at the end of 2024, showing how fast digital access continues to grow across the country.

China’s rising internet presence isn’t just about more people online. It’s also shaping global culture. Popular digital content like wuxia novels, romance series, mobile games, and short videos is now attracting huge international attention.

Chinese online literature alone brought in over ¥5 billion in revenue from foreign readers in 2024. These stories are now read by over 350 million fans worldwide, with neighbouring countries like Japan seeing a 180% increase in readers.

By early 2025, over 346 AI services were officially registered in China. Around 249 million users were already using tools like virtual assistants, AI health support, creative writing bots, and even legal advisory platforms.

These smart systems are being used in daily life in classrooms, offices, factories, and even homes, showing how deeply AI is being integrated into everyday life.

China’s online growth has also reached people in rural areas and older age groups. More than 161 million users are aged 60+, while 322 million people in rural areas are now online. Rural internet penetration stands at 69.2%, and among seniors, it’s now 52%.

This means more access to e-commerce, online learning, and telehealth services, empowering groups that were often left behind.

Behind this boom is China’s massive investment in digital infrastructure. The country has built millions of 5G towers, giving strong and fast internet access to towns and villages. China also leads globally in mobile payments, with over 1 billion people now paying online. Close to a billion citizens shop online regularly, marking a new era of digital commerce.

From short videos that go viral worldwide to AI-driven tools changing how people live and work, China’s online ecosystem is rapidly becoming a global force. The mix of powerful tech, creative content, and broad user reach is placing China at the heart of tomorrow’s digital culture and innovation.
