KRA Launching Chatbot to Assist Small Businesses with Tax Matters

  • KRA is introducing an online chatbot to support small businesses with tax information.
  • The bot will respond to common questions and work alongside KRA’s national education campaigns.
  • It is part of a bigger plan to simplify tax filing, registration, and payment processes.
  • Stakeholders urged for more collaboration and business-friendly policies.
  • KRA pledged to keep engaging MSMEs to improve tax compliance and ease of doing business.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is rolling out a digital assistant to help small businesses handle tax questions more easily. This chatbot will focus on guiding Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with essential tax-related information, in a bid to increase voluntary compliance and reduce confusion around the tax process.

George Obell, who heads the Micro and Small Taxpayers Department at KRA, shared the news during a roundtable in Nairobi. He said the chatbot is designed to answer frequent questions from small traders and will support the wider campaign KRA is running across the country to educate taxpayers.

“The chatbot will provide real-time help for MSMEs who may not fully understand their tax obligations. It’s part of our goal to make filing, payment, and registration smoother,” Obell stated.

KRA, Stakeholders Team Up to Boost MSME Support

The meeting, which brought together industry players and policymakers, focused on how to remove obstacles that prevent small businesses from complying with tax laws. Many attendees called on KRA to adopt more friendly strategies that empower, rather than punish, small entrepreneurs.

James Mureu, chair of the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA), appreciated the move by KRA and encouraged closer ties between the authority and business owners.

“KRA is becoming a true partner in our efforts to support small businesses. We must continue holding discussions and working together to unlock the full potential of this sector,” said Mureu.

To wrap up the session, KRA assured participants that it will keep working with MSMEs through similar dialogues. The authority aims to co-develop practical solutions that make running a small business easier while still contributing to national growth through fair taxation.
