Sakaja Warns Nairobians Against Littering as New Dustbins Arrive in the City

  • Nairobi County has introduced new black-branded dustbins across the CBD.
  • Governor Sakaja has urged residents to avoid illegal dumping and support city cleanliness.
  • The project will extend to residential areas after the CBD phase.
  • County officers will guard the bins round the clock to stop vandalism.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has issued a firm warning to city residents against improper waste disposal. This comes as the county begins the rollout of newly installed dustbins throughout the Central Business District (CBD) to boost urban cleanliness.

Clean Nairobi Starts With You, Sakaja Tells Residents

In his statement dated Wednesday, May 21, Sakaja stressed that keeping the city clean should be a shared duty. While praising the efforts of the county’s Green Army, he urged Nairobians to take responsibility by using the dustbins properly.

“Cleanliness is a collective responsibility. As the Green Army continues with their commendable efforts, let’s also play our part by not littering,” he said.

The Governor added that after covering the CBD, the dustbin installation will shift to residential estates.

County Launches Black Branded Bins

The newly introduced bins are painted black and feature Nairobi County government colors, along with the message: ‘Let’s make Nairobi work’. The design aims to promote pride and ownership among city residents.

“We’re calling on everyone to support this initiative by using the bins and respecting the environment,” Sakaja urged.

Officers to Protect Bins From Thieves

To avoid theft and destruction, the Nairobi County Government has deployed guards to watch over the new bins at all times. Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria said this move aims to protect public property from scrap metal dealers and other vandals.

“These dustbins belong to the people of Nairobi, and it is our collective responsibility to protect them from vandalism,” Mosiria said.

Spitting and Littering Will Lead to Arrest

Mosiria further noted that anyone caught throwing trash carelessly or spitting in public will face legal action. The Nairobi City County Public Nuisance Act sets a fine of Ksh10,000 for such offences.

“This includes people who spit phlegm on the ground instead of using a tissue or handkerchief. Offenders will be arrested and charged,” he added.
