Golden Season: Kabras Sugar RFC Honours Players After Historic Triumph

Kenya rugby heavyweights Kabras Sugar Rugby Football Club feted their players after the club completed the 2024/25 rugby season on a high note, winning the Kenya Cup title for the fourth time in a row as well as a 5-pete triumph in the domestic cup, The Enterprise Cup.

The event took place over the weekend at the club’s headquarters in Kakamega and was graced by the players, technical bench, club management, the sponsors; Kabras Sugar Company and the County government of Kakamega sports department honored the individual excellence that each player and member had contributed towards the “Golden Season”.

Among the notable names who were awarded in the 21-gala category include veteran captain George Nyambua, South African forward Ntabeni Dukisa, Fijian born fullback Jone Tavaga Kubu and Uganda cranes international Asuman Mugerwa.

 PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Ntabeni Dukisa scooped the Kabras RFC player of the year after converting most points for the side in the Kenya Cup, beating Patrick Sabatia and Walter Okoth who finished as runners-up and second respectively.

Rookie Jibril Ligonzo scooped the Eric Shirley Shield (ESS) player of the season after shining in the junior team’s league that Kabras missed out in the semis falling to Menengai Oilers. Roy Maruti and Jackton Osoo also were named in that award.

Historical players who have been committed to the sugar millers for over a decade were not left behind; skipper George Nyambua, Brian Tanga, Jone Kubu alongside Asuman Mugerwa were celebrated for their loyalty, fidelity and dedication to the club.

Eugene Sifuna’s punch and lethalness in the teams attack unit through the campaign made him grab the best forward gong as Victor Wawire availability and command in the backline made him feted also.

Comeback of the year went to Bryson Agesa Adaka after the seasoned back returned from a prolonged injury that had kept him out the 15s competition for a while but his return proved a sign of resilience.

The top-scorer medal was awarded to Griffin Chao for scoring most tries in the Kenya Cup same to Brian Kiptanui in the Eric Shirley Shield (ESS) league with Jeanson Misoga completing the Most Dedicated player.

The team captains of the side consisting of George Nyambua, Teddy Akala, Eugene Sifuna and Geoffrey Shitambasi were also decorated for their impressive leadership skills on and off the pitch.

Kabras technical bench led by head coach Carlos Katywa weren’t left behind that night as they were recognized for offering quality skills towards the club victory and received the best trainer award.
