  • His term as a Special Government Employee was coming to a legal close.
  • Musk hinted that the fight against waste in government will continue.
  • Behind-the-scenes reports point to tension with Trump’s inner team.
  • Musk had criticized one of Trump’s major proposals just before leaving.
  • Even on his last day, Musk attended key national security meetings.

Elon Musk has officially ended his role in the U.S. government, wrapping up his time as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Posting on X, Musk thanked former President Donald Trump for allowing him to take part in what he called a “mission to cut waste.”

“My time in this role is up,” Musk wrote.
He added that even though he’s leaving the position, the DOGE program would live on, encouraging better use of government resources.

Musk, who joined just after Trump’s January 20 inauguration, was nearing the 130-day legal limit for Special Government Employees. A White House insider mentioned that he could still offer guidance informally, and may be invited to high-level discussions in future.

Silent Disagreements Behind the Curtains

While official statements said Musk left on good terms, multiple sources suggest all was not smooth. Tensions reportedly rose after Musk publicly questioned Trump’s top legislative bill, calling it flawed just a day before stepping down.

The bill, which Trump had praised as a major win, became a point of disagreement, leading to what insiders believe was a strained relationship between Musk and some senior government players.

Despite the friction, Musk remained very active till his final hours in office. He even visited the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) on his last day, where he held talks about using tech to boost national security. Tulsi Gabbard, who now leads the ODNI, shared the visit on X.
