EACC Arrests Governor Natembeya Over Ksh.1.4B Graft Claims

  • Governor George Natembeya arrested over Ksh.1.4 billion embezzlement probe.
  • Allegations linked to tenders and kickbacks involving county projects.
  • EACC accuses him of influencing deals between 2022 and 2025.
  • His lawyer claims he’s been denied access to his legal team.
  • DAP-K boss Wamalwa terms the arrest politically motivated.
  • Natembeya’s supporters demand his release outside EACC headquarters.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has found himself in hot water after the EACC arrested him over suspected misuse of public funds. The amount in question is estimated at a staggering Ksh.1.4 billion, according to the latest updates from anti-corruption authorities.

Taken to Nairobi for Questioning

Early Monday, Natembeya was taken to the EACC headquarters in Nairobi to record a statement. His lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, confirmed the arrest but raised concerns that they were being locked out from seeing their client.

“They’ve locked him in, and we’re not allowed to guide him legally in this process,” Njiru told reporters gathered outside the EACC offices.

Focus on Multi-Billion Projects

Investigations center around three major county projects: Kenyatta Stadium Phase 1A, Tom Mboya Hospital construction, and the new County Headquarters offices. The EACC believes tender processes were interfered with and bribes were paid through close associates of the governor.

Raids Conducted at Several Locations

As the governor was being held, EACC officers conducted multiple raids in connection to the case. These included his official residence in Kitale and homes and offices of individuals suspected to be involved in the scandal.

Political Reactions Begin to Surface

Natembeya’s arrest has sparked loud reactions from opposition figures. Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa slammed the move, terming it political harassment.

“This is yet another attempt to silence opposition voices by misusing state agencies,” Wamalwa said, pointing to similar cases against leaders like MP Peter Salasya and DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua.

Protests Emerge Outside EACC Offices

Back in Nairobi, hundreds of Governor Natembeya’s supporters gathered outside the EACC premises, demanding his release. They carried placards and shouted pro-Natembeya slogans, calling the arrest unfair and unjustified.

Awaiting Further Interrogation

At the moment, the governor remains in EACC custody as investigations deepen. His legal team continues to press for access, even as political pressure surrounding the case builds across the country.
