The president has promised the government’s full backing throughout the AFCON under 20 tournament and urged the players to fly the national flag high.
“You have the full support of the government of Kenya — and my support as well. Thank you, and go make us proud. Make the country proud.”
The President also took the opportunity to applaud the country’s football talent and reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure to nurture young athletes.
“We have so much talent in this country. That’s why we’re investing in facilities like the world-class Talanta Sports City. We are committed to raising the standards of football across the board.”
The Rising Stars are set to depart for Morocco on Wednesday, 16 April, to conclude their final preparations before heading to Egypt for the continental showpiece.
However, President William Ruto has also pledged to attend the final of the upcoming U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Egypt if Kenya’s Rising Stars make it to the last hurdle of the tournament that is set to kick off on Sunday, 27 April.
The President made the commitment on Tuesday morning while hosting the Rising Stars at State House, Nairobi, for a flag-off ceremony ahead of their final preparation phase in Morocco. Kenya has been drawn into Group B alongside formidable opponents: Morocco, Tunisia, and Nigeria.
