President William Ruto has vowed to safeguard the legacy and reputation of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, both within Kenya and beyond its borders.
Speaking at KICC on Friday during the signing of the UDA-ODM framework agreement, Ruto stressed that Raila’s political journey has played a significant role in shaping Kenya’s democracy and should be recognized by all, regardless of rank or affiliation.
Recognizing Raila’s Influence
Reflecting on his own time in ODM, the President highlighted how Raila’s leadership had left a lasting impact on the country’s political sphere.
“Several months after the elections, I told him that he had been my party leader, and I wanted him to be treated with the respect he deserves. I will do whatever is necessary to ensure that Raila commands respect in Kenya—not for personal gain, but because he has earned it,” Ruto stated.
A Unity Pact for National Interests
Shortly after formalizing their cooperation, Ruto emphasized that the partnership was not about political positions or election strategies but rather about prioritizing Kenya’s development.
“This agreement is about putting Kenya first. It’s time we come together as a nation,” he remarked.
He further noted that Kenya had, for years, failed to make bold decisions necessary for progress due to political divisions.
Applauding Raila’s AU Candidacy
Ruto also took the opportunity to commend Raila for his bid to become the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson, describing him as a true pan-Africanist.
“I must applaud Raila for his courage and determination in making this decision for Kenya. This is a moment when Kenyans are united in their hope for a better future,” he concluded.
