A packed Nyayo Stadium witnessed heartbreak as Kenya’s Harambee Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Gabon in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Sunday, March 23. The visitors’ talisman, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, netted twice, sealing victory despite a late Michael Olunga strike for Kenya.

After the match, President William Ruto lauded the national team’s effort and vowed continued government support to ensure better preparation for upcoming fixtures.

“Harambee Stars showed great resilience in today’s game against Gabon. We will continue supporting our boys so they can be stronger and ready to deliver results in future matches,” said Ruto.

He also applauded the electrifying atmosphere at Nyayo, where thousands of fans turned up to back the home team.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed praised Kenyan supporters, noting their unwavering loyalty despite the defeat.

“A tough loss, but we live to fight another day. Huge appreciation to all Kenyans for the fantastic support – the 12th man truly showed up today, making it a special occasion after years of playing away from home. We keep pushing forward,” said Hussein.

Despite the setback, Harambee Stars remain determined to bounce back as they shift focus to their next World Cup qualifier fixture.
