Spanish forward Alvaro Negredo has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39.
“Thanks, football,” he said in a farewell video posted on social media, showing himself hanging up his boots.
Negredo, who last played for Real Valladolid, played a key role in the club’s promotion to La Liga before leaving at the end of last season.
The former Sevilla, Manchester City, and Valencia striker enjoyed a successful career, winning the Premier League and League Cup with City during the 2013-14 season before moving on loan to Valencia.
He was also part of Spain’s squad that lifted the Euro 2012 title, featuring in two matches during the tournament.
Beyond Spain and England, Negredo played in Turkey with Besiktas and had a stint in the Premier League with Middlesbrough. Across his career, he scored an impressive 290 goals in 755 club appearances and netted 10 goals in 21 caps for Spain.
