Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi was arrested on Tuesday morning under unclear circumstances, sparking concern and speculation among his family and supporters. Reports indicate that Koimburi was stopped outside his home on Kenyatta Road in Juja and taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters for questioning.
Before the arrest, Koimburi had raised alarms over the presence of two Subaru vehicles stationed outside his residence. He claimed that DCI officers intercepted him and escorted him to Kiambu Road without prior notice.
The arrest comes at a time of heightened political tension in Kenya, following the country’s unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship. Koimburi, known for his outspoken criticism of the government, had previously raised concerns over the financial implications of the AUC bid, alleging that taxpayers spent Ksh 13 billion on a campaign that ultimately ended in failure.
This is not the first time Koimburi has stirred political debate. In 2024, he made headlines when he alleged that the government had bribed MPs with Ksh 2 million each to secure votes for the controversial Finance Bill 2024. His comments drew backlash from fellow legislators, who demanded an apology.
As of now, the police have not released any official statement regarding the reasons for Koimburi’s arrest.
