- Nick Mwendwa was first elected as FKF President in 2016
- He has said that he will be running again for the FKF top seat
The 45-year-old president of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), Nick Mwendwa, has put an end to speculation about whether or not he will run for president again in the upcoming national elections of the FKF, which are scheduled for December 7, 2024.
According to the FKF constitution, Mwendwa is ineligible to run for office again after serving the required two terms.
However, he has confirmed to Flashscore exclusively that his name would be on the ballot for the next exercise seeking a third term.
As questioned if he would be competing again, Mwendwa responded that “I will defend my seat,” but he was unable to reveal which legislation would allow him to appear on the ballot. “In fact, I will present my nomination papers (for contesting) to the FKF Electoral Board on Monday, October 14th.”
After collecting 50 of the 77 available votes at Kasarani Gymnasium, Mwendwa was elected President of FKF on February 10, 2016, marking his first attempt at the position. Sam Nyamweya previously held the position for one term.
In respect to football elections in Kenya, Mwendwa became the 14th elected football leader since Independence. In the subsequent election, which took place on October 17, 2020, he was re-elected.
Others contestants include FKF Premier League outfit Gor Mahia CEO Sammy Ocholla, Extreme Sports CEO Hussein Mohammed, former FKF President Sam Nyamweya, former international Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino, former KPL CEO Jack Oguda, former FKF CEO Omondi Aduda, Kakamega Homeboyz FC Cleophas “Toto” Shimanyula and former FKF Nyanza NEC member Tom Alila.
