In a statement released on April 9, 2025, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula announced that EALA MP Falhada Dekow will be banned from entering Parliament Buildings for 90 days following a confrontation with ODM-nominated MP Umulkher Harun Mohamed. The Speaker’s decision comes after a video capturing the violent altercation went viral, sparking concerns about Parliament’s image.
Dekow has been instructed to submit a written explanation for the incident and is expected to apologize publicly by 5 pm on April 14, 2025. The apology must be delivered to the Speaker’s office.
The Impact of the Altercation
The Speaker emphasized that the altercation reflects poorly on the integrity of Parliament. He highlighted that such actions tarnish the reputation of the parliamentary precincts and undermine the dignity of the institution. Due to this, immediate steps were taken to ensure that such behavior is addressed appropriately.
Dekow is now prohibited from entering Parliament, except when presenting her explanation. The Speaker warned that depending on the content of the apology, further directions and actions may follow.
Apology from Umulkher
As for Umulkher Harun Mohamed, the Speaker stated that she must also apologize to the House. Wetangula mentioned that she would be given a chance to explain her side and issue an apology once the incident is fully reviewed.
Recording of the Incident
Speaker Wetangula also issued a warning to Members of Parliament against recording such incidents in the House. If it is confirmed that a sitting MP filmed the altercation, the individual may face sanctions in accordance with the Parliament Powers and Privileges Act.
