  • Khalwale has urged that CDF funds be abolished and education made free of charge.
  • The senator has urged President William Ruto to follow in the footsteps of the late Mwai Kibaki’s free education program.
  • Members of Parliament have objected to the funding of research being concentrated in one basket while studies around the country are made free.

Kakamega Senator Dr. Boni Khalwale has asked parliamentarians, governors, and other government leaders to ensure that money provided by politicians to support poor students’ education is removed and education is made free of charge, citing the example of Kenya’s third president, the late Mwai Kibaki.

Senator Khalwale, speaking in Malinya, Kakamega County, urged the Ministry of Education to keep all funds in the treasury to ensure free education.

“This money with structures, I don’t know if it should go to MCA to secure a bursary, go to the MP to find a bursary, go to the governor to obtain a bursary, it doesn’t reach the people,” Khalwale said.

Despite Khalwale’s request that political leaders agree to put all of the money in one basket, MPs have expressed concerns about the legality of taking cash for education from county governments and returning it to the national government.

Members of parliament argue that education should be free in the country rather than having a pool of funds to operate studies since the money will be seized by the corrupt who destroyed the current system.

Earlier, Vihiga county legislator Godfrey Osotsi stated that because counties are not responsible for funding university and institutional studies, they will not receive funding from the national government.

Furthermore, Khalwale noted that children from Kakamega and the broader Abaluhya group are missing out on university education.
