Motsepe said there is a lot to be done, but he believes President William Ruto will fulfill his promise to finish the stadiums.
On Monday, loud laughing filled the air as the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, held a meeting at the Kempinski Villa Rosa Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.
This came after Mr. Motsepe expressed his hope that the Kenyan government would be able to build better stadiums that meet FIFA standards before the African Nations Championship (CHAN) next year.
The president, who visited Kenya on Sunday to examine the stadiums being built and renovated, stated that there is much work to be done, but that he believes President William Ruto would keep his promises to deliver the stadiums.
“My opinion when I leave is to believe because I believe in President Ruto. Yes, there is a lot of work to be done. There is still a lot of work to be done but I trust him because he is a man of his word, and also because ….,” Motsepe said before loud laughter in the room interrupted him.
Then he decided not to continue making political comments and instead talk about football.
Motsepe arrived in the country on Sunday for a two-day visit and immediately began an inspection trip of Moi Stadium, Kasarani, Nyayo Stadium, and Talanta City.
He was led by Sports Minister Kipchumba Murkomen, Kenya Sports Director Pius Metto, and Kenya Football Federation President Nick Mwendwa, among others.
They also went to the new Talanta City stadium, whose capacity is 60,000 spectators and is located in Nairobi’s Jamuhuri grounds.
Nick Mwendwa and the Sports Cabinet Minister convinced the CAF President that Kenya would meet the December deadline.
Despite this, Motsepe demanded better grass at the Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums, including Fifa-approved green grass. He wants the stadiums to be balanced, with uniforms and distinct white markings.
