Harambee starlets striker Esse Akida has stood out as a beacon of hope in the Kenyan soccer after publishing out her soccer journey through a book titled “CHAINED”. The book is all about her riddled winning moments and a fair share of challenges. In an interview, Akida aged 31 said that she took the step to write the book to narrate her soccer story to all people who have not been able to reach out to her.
Akida, born in Mnarani,Kilifi county started showing up her passion in football at the age of 8 by becoming one of the first girls to join Moving The Goalposts (MTG) a local organization empowering girls through football in Kilifi..Her prowess on the field was evident during the 2016 COTIF Women Football Tournament in Valencia, Spain, where she emerged as the top scorer with five goals, including a standout performance against Benfica Portugal Women and Española.
Her achievements extended beyond the field, as Esse was recognized as a youth heroine in her county, a milestone symbolizing her impact on the local community and beyond.
Esse Akida who is also a graduate of a Bachelor in Business Administration joined PAOK, Greece in the 2021. During her time in Greece she has won the golden boot after scoring a staggering 17 goals in 18 games.
While in an interview at Radio Jambo,Esse Akida said that one of the reasons why she came up with idea of scripting “CHAINED” is explaining out the importance of investing in women football. She narrated that the soccer talents in Kenya should be invested by appreciating the work done.
Akida’s journey in publishing her book ‘’Chained” started two years ago, a process which developed just the way a seed is planted, germinates and grows as a crop. She added that her book is an autobiography which narrates her life both on and off the pitch. It’s a story with a great impact to general audience and especially to a grilchild who wants to become someone and achieve her dreams.
”The general idea in my book shows that impossible is nothing. I was chained, but not chained forever. It has never been easy but I still became whoever I wanted to be.” She said.
Akida also narrated how her family helped her to achieve a successful future. This happened through how the parents advised her on how to balance academics and playing soccer. ’My family has been supportive all through. They have supported me both financially and emotionally.” She stated.
Despite winning moments,Esse Akida also experienced a number of challenges. She narrated out her stay in Israel which was also accompanied by several challenges including language barrier. Akida explained that her confidence helped her outcome several challenges while in Israel. She also incorporated the Life skills which she was taught back while at Moving the Goalposts,MTG.
Additionally,Akida also sent a request to the Football Kenya Federation to ensure that many investors are brought on board to boost the levels of Kenyan football.It will be one of the ways of motivating young footballers in the country so as to achieve much.”Everyone in Kenya should have a positive perception towards the game” she said.
Esse’s story is a reminder that through determination and support, barriers can be broken, and dreams can be realized.
