Many young youths have turned to drugs as a result of a lack of employment opportunities. Drugs such as Khat, “Mogoka”, and alias “Jaba” are among those that have been legalized in the country. When you walk around Nairobi’s streets, you will usually come across a youthful crowd seated at one place they refer to as “baze ya kuchana,” enjoying the sweet leaves of the miraa plant.

During a walk through the Nairobi CBD, we met a young Stephanie who lives in Utawala and works as a beautician at Nairobi town. On our way, we came along a “Kibanda” crowded with young people chewing miraa. Someone from the crowd could rush, on our way to greet Stephanie, My team and I were wondering, “Who is he?”

Stephanie admits that, despite his Miraa addiction, Otis is the best version of men he has ever met. In comparision to her ex, who was a pastor, she describes “Otis” as a very satisfying husband. She even sometimes encourages her to persist in using the drug, which she relates to as a stimulant for bedroom matters.

On the other hand, as an experienced user, Otieno agreed with Stephanie but advised young people to avoid drugs due to their negative side effects.

His main issue with Miraa, he says, is a lack of sleep.
