Son claims responsibility after Antonio Conte sacking

Heung-Min Son has recently spoken about feeling a sense of responsibility for the departure of former Tottenham Hotspur manager, Antonio Conte.

This comes after the South Korean forward failed to replicate his impressive form from last season, which helped secure a top-four finish for Spurs and the Premier League golden boot for Son himself.

Son a key player

Last season, Son was a key player under Conte’s management, helping the team secure a spot in the Champions
League with his 23 league goals. However, this season has been a different story, with the forward only managing to score six goals in the league before Conte’s departure was confirmed on Sunday night.

Conte had reportedly criticized his players following the 3-3 draw with Southampton, which could have contributed to his eventual departure. Son’s admission of feeling responsible for Conte’s exit highlights the pressure that players can feel when their performance is not meeting expectations.

Speaking after South Korea’s defeat to Uruguay on Tuesday, Son said: “I’m very sorry to him. He is a world-class manager.

“We had a great journey together. I thank him a lot. I do not know how other players are thinking about him but I’m sorry to him.

“I should have shown more but I couldn’t. I couldn’t help the team and I feel responsible as he left the club.

“He surely has great ability and experience as a coach and I’m sure he’ll have great success in his other career.”

Reaction after Son comments

It is yet to be seen how Spurs will fare under their new manager, but Son’s comments suggest that the team will need to step up their game in order to achieve their goals. Fans will no doubt be hoping that the South Korean forward can regain his form from last season and help the team to success in the future.
