Kenyan President William Ruto has announced the start of a new affordable housing programme that will help thousands of Kenyans own their own homes.

The programme aims to provide economic opportunities to thousands more through the construction of homes, creating a foundation for social mobility and improved quality of life.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the LAPFUND Bellevue Park Residence Project in Nairobi, Ruto said that the project is one of many across the country that will help the government deliver on its promise to provide 200,000 housing units per year.

He added that the government will work with county governments and the private sector to drive the agenda forward.

Ruto praised the project, saying that it will provide decent and affordable housing to Kenyans, as well as create jobs for thousands of people in the construction industry.

He also emphasized the government’s commitment to providing affordable housing to all Kenyans, particularly those in low-income brackets.

“Our affordable Housing programme puts the dream of home ownership within the reach of thousands of Kenyans while providing economic opportunities for thousands of others through the construction of the homes. This programme is about dignifying everyday hustle and effort; creating a foundation for social mobility and enabling an improved quality of life,” he said.

“The LAPFUND Bellevue Park Residence Project in Nairobi is one of the projects across the country that will help us deliver the 200,000 housing units a year we promised the nation. We will work with county governments and the private sector to drive this agenda forward.”

Stakeholders support

The President urged other stakeholders in the housing sector to support the government’s efforts to provide affordable housing, stating that the government cannot do it alone.

He added that the private sector and county governments have a critical role to play in the success of the programme.
