Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris has shed light on her decision to vote in favour of the Housing Levy, emphasizing her vision for a Kenya where the image of slums is consigned to history books rather than being a reality on the ground.

Passaris, a staunch advocate for social and economic development, expressed her aspiration to see a transformed Kenya where the plight of millions of citizens living in over 1,400 slums becomes a thing of the past. With this vision in mind, she made the conscious choice to support the Housing Levy proposal.

Passaris on belief

The Housing Levy, aimed at mobilizing resources for affordable housing initiatives, has attracted significant attention and debate across the country. However, Passaris firmly believes that investing in housing infrastructure is a critical step towards addressing the challenges faced by Kenyans living in slums and improving their quality of life.

By voting in favor of the Housing Levy, Passaris aims to contribute to the realization of dignified and decent housing for all Kenyans. She recognizes that the road ahead is challenging, but remains steadfast in her commitment to championing policies and initiatives that create sustainable solutions for housing and urban development.

Passaris’s decision aligns with her long-standing advocacy for vulnerable populations and marginalized communities. She firmly believes that every Kenyan deserves a safe and secure place to call home, and sees the Housing Levy as a means to make this a reality.

“I have a dream of a Kenya where the image of slums remains in our history books and not on our motherland. For the millions of Kenyans living in the 1,400+ slums, I voted YES on the Housing Levy,” she said.

As the debate on the Housing Levy continues, Passaris encourages constructive dialogue and engagement among stakeholders to ensure that the levy’s implementation is transparent, accountable, and beneficial to all Kenyans. She emphasizes the importance of considering the needs and aspirations of the most vulnerable members of society throughout this process.
