Why Noordin Haji Has Lost Leadership Integrity Award Conferred To Him In 2019

Transparency International Kenya has decided to withdraw the Leadership Integrity Award (State/Public Officer) conferred upon Mr. Noordin Haji in 2019.

The decision comes after concerns were raised regarding the withdrawal of high-profile corruption cases, including those for which Haji was previously recognized, leading to the loss of public funds. Transparency International Kenya expressed its commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and deemed it crucial for all award recipients.

Letter to Noordin Haji

In a letter addressed to Mr. Noordin Haji, Transparency International Kenya conveyed its decision to revoke the Leadership Integrity Award. The letter stated that the award was initially granted to Haji in recognition of his significant role in the criminal justice process, particularly in ensuring the prosecution of serious corruption cases and providing strategic direction to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). At the time of the award, the judging panel, consisting of independent commissions, enforcement agencies, professional bodies, and civil society organizations, acknowledged Haji’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and inspiring public confidence in his office.

However, Transparency International Kenya mentioned that it had received public petitions and conducted an assessment based on concerns raised by the public and integrity champions in Kenya. These petitions alleged that Haji had withdrawn high-profile corruption cases, which had previously been recognized, resulting in the misappropriation of public funds.

The organization further stated that it had examined the detailed information and evidence presented in a petition prepared by the National Integrity Alliance, which highlighted the extent to which Haji had deviated from his responsibilities as the Director of Public Prosecutions, eroding public confidence in his office.

Maintaining high standards

Based on these concerns and after careful consideration, Transparency International Kenya made the decision to withdraw the Leadership Integrity Award conferred upon Mr. Noordin Haji in 2019. The organization emphasized its firm belief that maintaining the highest standards of integrity is essential for all recipients of their awards. As a result, they requested Haji to return the certificate and plaque that were issued to him in recognition of the award.
