President William Ruto has affirmed the government’s dedication to achieving the successful implementation of Universal Health Care (UHC) in Kenya.
He emphasized that the government will prioritize preventive healthcare by focusing on community health workers, reforming the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), and ensuring the provision of necessary medical supplies and equipment to facilitate the delivery of UHC.
“There have been two failed attempts to implement universal healthcare. But this time round, we are determined to achieve it successfully.
Preventive care will make it possible to deal with health issues early at the community level, which will ease crowding at hospitals. “
Addressing the issue during a meeting with Global Fund Executive Director Peter Sands at State House Nairobi, President Ruto acknowledged the challenges faced in previous attempts to implement universal healthcare but expressed determination to achieve success this time.

The President stressed the importance of preventive care in dealing with health issues at the community level, which would alleviate overcrowding in hospitals. He highlighted the need for community health workers to play a central role in this endeavor.
President Ruto also emphasized the significance of the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) in the equation, urging the agency to improve its service delivery. While acknowledging the issues faced by KEMSA, he assured that efforts are underway to address and resolve them.
Additionally, the President underscored the government’s commitment to combating corruption and addressing challenges within the NHIF to enhance its efficiency.
Global Fund Executive Director Peter Sands commended President Ruto for taking decisive action to clean up KEMSA, emphasizing the strong relationship between Kenya and the Global Fund. Sands expressed support for the government’s universal healthcare agenda and offered the organization’s technical expertise to aid in its implementation.
The successful delivery of Universal Health Care is a crucial goal for the Kenyan government, aiming to provide accessible and affordable healthcare services to all citizens.
